"You don't have a time management issue, you just don't want to do it!" (I heard this on City Line, I think)
January 16, 2018
I heard this on City Line, I think, it was on in the background while I was working. They were talking about New Year's resolutions and how by about now people have already fallen off the wagon or quit their resolutions. We make excuses, we don't have the resources, energy, time to achieve the resolutions.
There are a few things wrong with this, why do we set a resolution that we can't accomplish? Is it too hard, too unrealistic? Do we not really want to do it? Did we set the goal just because we felt we have to? Is the goal too general? Did you think about how to achieve the goal?
Don't have the resources? It's too expensive to hire a trainer or join the gym. It's too expensive to buy organic or whole foods. Don't have enough support to get things done?
-buy or stream exercise videos
-join a small group or class instead of one to one, bring a friend to get a a partner discount
-run or walk, all you need is shoes, and these are natural movements your body needs to do anyway
-buy seasonal food it's cheaper, buy in bulk and do some food prep
-plan your meals, so you only buy what you need for the week to prepare the meals you plan to eat, you wont waste food and therefore wont waste money
Don't have the energy? Well this is a cyclical problem. If you don't take care of yourself, you wont have energy, and if you don't have enough energy you wont feel like taking care of yourself.
-make time for you, that's it just do it
Don't have enough time? This is the worst one and the other 2 are related to this one in many ways.
-everyone says they don't have enough time
-work is too busy
-my family and kids are so time consuming
-after I cook, clean, work, run errands and get a few hours of sleep there is no time for me to achieve my goals (ahem! priorities, is cleaning really more important than eating well or moving your body)
You can't 'find time' or 'make time', time is what it is, you carve out time for what matters to you, if you can't 'find or make time' that means You Don't Want to Do It!
I have always been getting clients to try to set goals, identify road blocks and how to overcome them. This helps to think of the goal in detail, what it is, how to achieve it and how things could get in your way and how to fix those roadblocks in advance. We discuss accountability and check in points and break the goals down into smaller goals. This is a great process and it works. But it can fail if the person just really doesn't want to do it!
Stop setting goals you don't care about. If you do care about it write it down, detail it out, step by step into small actionable steps. Grand general statement goals are not achievable and just set you up for failure.
Take time for you. Don't find it, TAKE IT!
Stop setting yourself up for failure.
Start by loving you! The rest will fall into place.
Sorry this was a bit all over the place but I care about my clients and hate to see people beating themselves up year after year after year. It's time to make real change!!!
